History
100 Plus Years in the Making…
In 1923 three men: E.B. Studebaker, R.M. Johnson, and J.W. Lichliter originated the idea of founding Jonda Fraternity. They were later joined by M.M. Klepinger, S.A. Wells, and E.D. Ford. These six became the original charter members. Prof. Hanswalt was their advisor.
Our coat of arms as a whole mean chivalry as do in particular the helmet at the top and the large Maltese Cross in the center.
There is quite a story surrounding the cross. Early in the Crusades, famous bands of knights dedicated themselves to the cause of escorting pilgrims to the Shrine of Jesus in Jerusalem.
They were known as the “Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.” Their headquarters was established on the island of Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean Sea.
For their badge they selected the cross of notched extremities which has since became known as the Maltese Cross. This was their emblem which they bore whenever they went out, wherever they went, and which they defended with their lives.
Because of the chivalry and bravery they displayed in their work, their cross was used throughout the days of knighthood as a symbol of chivalry.
